As seen on Fox & Friends – October 24, 2021

Watch the kickoff of our Pinhoti Project on the Fox & Friends segment here.

Pauli and I are so excited to share this project that we’ve been working on for the last several month! Like most, this past year had our family re-evaluating the way we do life, and longing even more for a place we can escape. Pinhoti Peak will be a modern construction mountain cabin that will be our retreat from the daily grind, the place we unplug and immerse ourselves into nature. And you’re invited to come along this journey with us!

From property scouting, site preparation, design, construction and all the way to final staging, we will be documenting every stage of our process. We hope to inspire and educate you with innovative design and space planning, the latest in building technology and construction techniques, and top of the line finishes.

We are just getting started…concrete crews are currently pouring foundations as I type. When we finish, you will be invited to come experience Pinhoti Peak for yourself…either in our digital show house, or in real life (stay tuned for more details)!

Here’s a sneak peak of our current design…

Tips to Set Yourself Up for New Construction Success

The past two years have been an unprecedented time in real estate to say the least. Prices are soaring, labor can be hard to come by, and supply chain issues have delayed (and sometimes devastated) countless projects. What can you do about it?

As a homeowner, if you’re tackling a remodel or new construction build in this climate, the very best thing you can do is to CREATE A PLAN! This plan should be a list of what you hope to accomplish in the short and long term, an educated estimate of the cost and time, the materials and service providers that will help you achieve your goals, as well as researching potential challenges and various options for overcoming issues as they arise.

We only recommend products we have personally used and while some of the pics and stats may come from the manufacturer, all of the tips and opinions are our own.

Below are some of the initial challenges and goals we are addressing on our remote build for Pinhoti Peak!

Pinhoti Challenge (1):

How can we make receiving and storing our building supplies and finish materials more convenient and secure when our property is located over an hour away and we are not on site everyday?

Pinhoti Solution (1):

Our solution was to utilize the convenient portable storage containers primarily used for a residential move as our temporary shipping and receiving hub. We had 1-800-PACK-RAT deliver their super secure, all-steel, waterproof storage container to our home office. That way we can quickly receive the deliveries and then continue with our day, avoiding the 3+ hours of commuting back and forth to our construction site. Once our container is full, 1-800-PACK-RAT will come pick up the container, store it for as long as we need at a local warehouse, and then deliver it to site when we are ready to use!

With over 65 locations across the US, these convenient portable storage units from 1-800-PACK-RAT are likely in your area to service your relocation and/or construction storage needs. And they are quite affordable…they won’t break the bank while giving your more convenience and flexibility than other moving and storage options!

Pinhoti Challenge (2):

With this mountain build we experience far more precipitation than we ever would have expected (or remembered from middle school earth science classes)! Lots of rain can certainly complicate many aspects of new construction…one of which we are especially concerned about is ensuring a high-quality envelope of the building structure.

Pinhoti Solution (2):

Enter DAP’s® AMP™ (Advanced Modified Polymer) Sealants! These are advanced hybrid sealants that are designed to outperform silicone and provide maximum performance for every project. AMP Sealants provide a 100% weatherproof and waterproof seal with the ability to be applied on wet and damp surfaces…and feature a fast and efficient 30 minute paint and rain/water ready times. AMP sealants can be applied in extreme temperatures (0-140 degrees F), prevent mold and mildew growth and are backed by a lifetime guarantee, rivaling any other high-performance product in the market today.

AMP is available in a 100% weatherproof and waterproof Window & Door sealant and a 100% waterproof Kitchen & Bath sealant.

DAP is also helping us eliminate any stripped screws on our Pinhoti Project with their Tank Bond Liquid Grip. Just one drop instantly adds up to 7x more grip once applied to an untreated screw to stop your tool or bit from slipping out and stripping a screw. Whether you’re installing or removing, the Tank Bond Liquid Grip formula works on any type and size of fastener. Plus, Liquid Grip cleans up easily when the work is done – simply wipe with a paper towel.

Liquid Grip is ideal for heavily used screws on items such as door hardware, kitchen drawers, recreational equipment and even lawn and power tools. Click here to find on Amazon.

Pinhoti Challenge (3):

Since Pinhoti will be a destination that will sleep 12+, our mechanical systems will likely experience bouts of high demand. With this periodic high demand, what water heating solution will provide us the best combination of efficiency, on-demand supply, and overall cost investment?

Pinhoti Solution (3):

You’ve probably know the pros and cons for both tank and tankless water heaters, but have you heard about a HYBRID water heater? The new Rheem® ProTerra Hybrid Electric Water Heater is the smartest and most efficient water heater on the market! The ProTerra is up to 4x’s more efficient than a standard electric water heater and can save you up to $480 per year in energy costs (while also minimizing your impact on the environment). The ProTerra Hybrid is available in 40, 50, 65 and 80 gallon capacities to ensure you’ll never have to choose between sustainability and hot water!

In addition to its superior performance and energy efficiency, one of the things I really love about the Rheem® ProTerra is the built-in EcoNet WiFi technology. I can adjust water temperature, track energy usage and set vacation mode all from my cell phone. We can also receive alerts about a leak in as little as 15 seconds with the with built-in LeakSense water leak detection system. This is a LIFE SAVER for any home but especially more so in our investment properties where we are not on site everyday.

Pinhoti Challenge (4):

The last thing we want in a vacation home is tons of maintenance…so what products can we use to reduce future exterior maintenance?

Pinhoti Solutions (4) (a):

For the exterior cladding, Chip found these amazing fiber-cement architectural panels from EQUITONE. We are utilizing a combination of their Linea (a 3D riged material that plays with light and shadows) and the Tectiva (more of a concrete, natural and strong look). EQUITONE panels are available in large format sizes. They can be cut to any size or shape necessary either in a shop or on the job site. The design possibilities are limitless. When used as part of a ventilated rain-screen cladding system or rear-ventilated curtain wall facade, EQUITONE panels allow air to circulate behind the cladding, keeping moisture, mold, heat, and frost away from the building.

The panels can be attached with visible or concealed fasteners, giving your architectural project the safety and aesthetics you expect from high-density fiber-cement façade.   And perhaps BEST OF ALL, the color goes all the way through these panel, which means: NO PAINTING…EVER!

Pinhoti Solutions (4) (b):

Real standing seam metal roofing is known for its longevity, and McElroy Metal is the leading manufacturer of metal roofs…so it isn’t a surprise that Chip went with the best! McElroy’s Maxima standing seam roof panels are mechanically seamed for a long lasting beautiful roof.

In addition covering the entire 6,600 sq ft of roof, we plan to continue the low maintenance material on the rear elevation of the by installing the Wave Panel horizontally utilizing hidden clips and fasteners.

Pinhoti Challenge (5):

So, someone in our family might be famous for losing keys…and with so much to secure on our job site, is there a better way to lock up our equipment and supplies without having to keep track of dozens of keys?

Pinhoti Solutions (5):

Ok, this is pretty cool…now I only have to keep track of my vehicle key! The BOLT Series of locks lets you set all your truck, trailer and equipment locks to work with only one key. BOLT has a wide variety of locks, from padlocks and cable locks to receiver or collar pin locks that can all be programmed to open with your vehicle key! All you have to do is simply insert your ignition key into the BOLT lock, turn it once and the lock mechanically and permanently learns the key code.
